A big welcome to guest blogger Inez Kelley, whose fantasy romance Salome at Sunrise is available from Carina Press.

So, Inez, how did you get the idea for Salome at Sunrise?

No freaking clue. There ya’ go, the secret is out. I didn’t plan on writing a sequel to Myla by Moonlight but a few writer friends and a huge number of fans wrote and asked when Bryton’s story was coming out. Uhm, Bryton’s story? Bryton has a story?

Yes, Bryton had a story and he demanded I tell it. The very first words he whispered in my ear were “You better tell this right.” *gulp* No pressure there, big man. The first image that appeared to me was Salome staring into a sunrise, tears in her eyes. That intrigued me. The next picture I saw was Bryton, standing on a rocky overlook with this wind whipping around him. Both those scenes made it into the story.

What do you enjoy most about writing in your genre?

LOL. I have a genre? Really? I write anything. I have a romantic comedy and two fantasies published, three erotic contemporaries coming out and an entire slew of stuff from historical to YA not finished yet. Genre? What is that?

I like a good story, period. I get bored with the same old stuff. So I flip flop and write what appeals to me. 99% of the time, it has an element of romance.

Who is your favourite character in Salome at Sunrise? Why?

Oh man! Favorite? Hmm, I dunno. Salome is a spunky little firecracker who doesn’t take Bryton’s crap. The villain, Karok, *shivers* he was deliciously evil to write. If I have to pick, though, I pick Bryton. I love to hate him. He is the hero I didn’t want to write but who I fell in love with anyway. The depth of his honor and devotion are astounding, the level of his guilt and grief crushing and his love almost pristine in its purity.

Who are your favourite authors? Have they influenced your writing?

Erma Bombeck showed me how to laugh at everyday life. Roberta Gellis showed me there is beauty in the details and JR Ward showed me heroes that defy convention but readers adore.

When is your favourite time of day to write?

It depends on what I am writing. I prefer to write emotionally intense scenes and sex scenes at night, when the house is quiet and I am undisturbed. Action and dialogue I prefer to write in the morning when my mind is fresh.

Other than writing, do you have any talents you’d like to share? Quirks?

I’m a damn fine southern cook. I love to bake and am quite handy with a toolbox around the house. I’m addicted to sweet tea and don’t like ice cream. I prefer caramel to chocolate and will pick chips over candy any day.

If you had a free day to do anything you wanted, what would you do?

Write. Or Read. Sleep.

What kind of ereader do you prefer? (I’m doing research here. I need to buy one.)

I am still looking myself! I desperately want one but I want one that fits all my needs. Not sure which that is yet.

What are you working on now?

I am about 1/3 the way finished the final in the trilogy (Myla by Moonlight, Salome at Sunrise and Darach in Darkness). I also have two working novellas going and a full length contemporary about ready to ship out. There are also two other half finished full lengths on my computer, a romcom and a second contemporary.

Thanks, Inez, for stopping by. It’s been a pleasure chatting with you.

Salome at Sunrise by Inez Kelley, new from Carina Press.

It’s not nice to piss off Mother Nature…

Bryton Haruk sets out on a suicide mission to stop the bloodthirsty Skullmen from terrorizing the war-weary Land of Eldwyn. Consumed by guilt over the death of his wife, Bryton seeks revenge and reunion in the afterlife with his lost love. His purpose is determined, his bravery unmatched, until the queen casts a spell to save Bryton from himself.

Salome is that spell. A bird-shifter, she can harness the earth’s breeze and take the form of a beautiful, innocent woman. Her challenge is to harness Bryton’s pain and guide him to peace. She entrances and irritates him, tempting Bryton from his mission. Even as he gives in to the passion between them, Bryton insists on mounting a solo attack on the brigands’ compound, and Salome fears her love won’t be enough to save him…

Inez Kelley writes romance, in almost any form— be it laughter, tears, fear or joy. She loves to wring every drop from whatever emotion is at hand. An E911 dispatcher for over a decade, she heard untold human suffering as it happened, gathering insights to the working of the human mind at critical, life-altering moments. Her wish is to make you laugh, cry and ache, all in one story.

Congratulations Carina Press!

The Price of Freedom by Jenny Schwartz
Friday, June 4th, 2010

It’s my pleasure to welcome guest blogger, Jenny Schwartz. Jenny and I met when we were both contracted by Carina Press. Coincidentally we’re both Australian, our books release on the same day and we’ve both written about guardian angels. Now, over to Jenny…

Hi Janni, I’m so pleased to be visiting and blogging, and knowing you’re doing the same over at my blog. Of course, you’re providing a witty, intelligent post and I’m rambling, so I’m definitely getting the better part of the deal. Thanks, mate.

*Note to readers: “mate” proves we’re Aussie.

In just a few days (June 14) Carina Press releases my paranormal romance novella, The Price of Freedom, and the truth is I’m nearly incoherent with excitement. The cover is stunning, the story has benefitted from inspired editing and I’m totally in love with the hero. Rafe is a djinni–think desert sheik with angel powers, bound to the service of humanity.

Paranormal romance is one of my favourite romance sub-genres because it brings magic into ordinary life. The danger is darker, the excitement spicier, the possibilities wilder, but love remains the same. Two people are dancing towards intimacy, afraid to share themselves yet newly alive to the joys that openness will bring. Romance novels celebrate the greatest risk of all–love.

Duty will bring them together—and tear them apart!

As a guardian angel, Mischa must protect the one man who may be able to bring about lasting peace to the Middle East. As a djinni, Rafe must fulfill the wishes of a terrorist leader. Their duties colliding, Mischa and Rafe become foes, but the heat between them is undeniable.

When the terrorist learns that a guardian angel stands between him and his greatest wish, he orders his djinni to remove her. Taking creative license, Rafe spirits her away to his private oasis, where she will be unable to protect the peacemaker.

Beyond their mutual desire, they find common ground in honor and loneliness. Passion quickly grows into love. But it’s soon clear to Rafe that love cannot be bound, and Mischa must be true to her life’s purpose. Even if Rafe must sacrifice his own taste of freedom to grant hers…

Sea of Suspicion by Toni Anderson
Friday, June 4th, 2010

My guest on the blog today is Carina Press author Toni Anderson. Welcome Toni.

Thanks for letting me be on your blog today, Janni J. I write Romantic Suspense and my latest book, SEA OF SUSPICION, has just been released by Carina Press and I’m thrilled! It’s a moody atmospheric sexy romantic mystery set on the misty shores of contemporary Scotland. This story is particularly special to me as I set it in the Scottish Marine Laboratory where I conducted my Ph.D. and met my husband in the early nineties. I was lucky enough to revisit the lab in April this year and, though it has grown and morphed into a much larger institute, the essence of the original Victorian building remains the same. The rugged beauty of the East Fife coastline and the hypnotic rhythm of the sea never fail to enthrall and I know I’ll never get enough of that gorgeous coastal region.

So, Toni, how did you get the idea for Sea of Suspicion?

I wanted to write a murder mystery using the Marine Lab where I did my Ph.D., just because it is so beautiful and atmospheric. I remember working there late at night and feeling chills flash over my skin when I had to make my way through the pitch-black building and then home along the seafront—just like one of the women in the story does.

What do you enjoy most about writing romantic suspense?

When I discovered RS I realized it contained the perfect story blend for me as a reader—the danger and excitement combined with emotional investment and commitment from the characters. I guess I like the fact that the hero and heroine in a romance share similar values to me in terms of pledging yourself to one person and working at a relationship. The suspense aspect of RS just puts their lives on the line while they are trying to sort out the complicated emotions that rush through people who are falling in love.

Do you write any other genres?

I’ve tried to write straight contemporary. It is MUCH harder J.

Who is your favourite character in Sea of Suspicion? Why?

The hero, Nick Archer, is one of those people who walks in shadow and could just have easily come out on the wrong side of good and evil. He’s intelligent, ruthless and determined. He’s also sentimental and caring. I love him to bits. I’m also very fond of his partner for more personal reasons. You might be able to guess when you read the book.

Who are your favourite authors? Have they influenced the direction of your writing?

Impossible question! Nora Roberts, Linda Howard, Lisa Gardener, Loreth Anne White, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Karen Marie Moning, and the incomparable Suzanne Brockmann, plus many many more! They’ve influenced me by writing great stories and by following their dreams and working hard to achieve their goals. Bravo!

When is your favourite time of day to write?

Anytime. I have young children and just relish getting to the computer. I write faster in the afternoon than morning, and no matter how hard I try I can never get up at 5 a.m. but I can write past midnight.

Other than writing, do you have any talents you’d like to share?

I paint—although I haven’t done anything for ages. And I like to garden, although in Winnipeg it is a challenge. I love walking and travelling and photography (have you seen my blog? http://tonianderson.blogspot.com)

If you had a free day to do anything you wanted, what would you do?

Depends on the weather and my mood J. Often it would be writing. If it was sunny and bright I might go up to the Whiteshell for a walk over the Canadian Shield (but I lost my dog just before Christmas and walks just aren’t the same right now L). If it was snowing I might curl up with a new book by a favourite author, or watch a movie, or even, on very rare days, enjoy wandering gift shops and buying early Christmas presents (I’m a planner and I hate crowds!!)

What kind of ereader do you prefer? (I’m doing research here. I need to buy one.)

Let me know when you decide! I don’t know. I wish I’d had one for our trip to Europe as it is no fun with a suitcase full of books, especially children books! I want one!

What are you working on now?

An ecological thriller/romantic suspense based on protecting snow leopards in Afghanistan.

Thanks so much for having me on your blog, Janni! I’ve set up a fan page for SEA OF SUSPICION with location photographs and anecdotes. I’d love to hear what readers think. My first Romantic Suspense, HER SANCTUARY, was released in 2009 to some great reviews.  I love to hear from people and I write about my travels on my blog and update on Twitter.  Readers can sign up for my newsletter on my website, or friend me on Facebook.

SEA OF SUSPICION

Blurb…

Marine biologist Susie Cooper traded her life in America for a dream job on the rugged Scottish coast. Now all she lacks is the right man to start a family with. After their first meeting, she knows sexy Detective Inspector Nick Archer isn’t what she’s looking for. He’s the type of guy whose idea of commitment is staying the whole night.

Nick has returned to St. Andrews for one reason only—to fulfill his vow to find his wife’s killer. Relentless in his twelve-year quest for justice, he has no problem using Susie to get close to his primary suspect: her boss. But the passion between them smolders, and as it ignites, Nick finds himself torn between his past and his present—with Susie.

When one of her boss’s students is murdered, Nick’s investigation draws Susie into a web of madness and betrayal. They will have to learn to trust each other if they’re going to catch a killer…and come out of this alive.

********************************************************************************

Excerpt…

“What you got, Lewis?” Nick asked the square-faced policewoman. Her expression was serious. P.C. Julie Lewis was slow to smile, but smart and dedicated, with no pretensions.

“Those two found a body.” She indicated the girls, who sat crying. “I think we’re looking at a murder, sir.” At his raised brow, she added. “Pretty hard to smash in your own skull.”

Nick’s stomach clenched. Murder?

He looked along the footpath, dread digging claws into his stomach and trying to find purchase. He knew homicide. He’d done four years’ homicide after he’d finished his undercover stint, but St. Andrews hadn’t seen a murder in years.

Had this poor bugger been bleeding to death when he had broken into the Gatty? Had he tracked the vic’s blood into the building? Into Susie’s car? Could he have saved a life if he’d been paying more attention to the present, rather than wasting his time trying to avenge the past?

Nick looked up at the overcast sky and thought for one split second he heard Chrissie’s laugh. He was going to hell for a little B&E. Or maybe for wanting a woman in a way he hadn’t in more than a decade.

The wind blasted his cheeks, icy and raw. Twin flashlights beamed into his eyes and he was instantly blind.

“Get those things out of my face,” he yelled.

“Sorry, sir.” Two synchronous replies.

Nick smelled blood in the air, sharp and cuprous. His intestines flip-flopped as he took another step down the grassy slope. P.C. Eric Mosel and Sergeant Hammy Soothill ran their beams over the body of a young woman.

Christ. “ID?”

Both men shook their heads.

“We tried not to disturb the locus.” P.C. Mosel, or Mouse as he was known in the station, was normally a bit of a twat, niggling away at the division between CID and uniform coppers—the filth and the woodentops as they were called. But not tonight. Tonight he was all business. “I thought she might still be alive.”

The back of her skull was smashed like a broken eggshell, pale bone gleaming amongst gore. The flashlights picked out blood matting her hair, streaking her neck, staining the sand beneath her body a rusty brown. It was bloody obvious she was dead, but they’d still need a doctor for verification. A body could be trailed from one end of the beach to the other, but police officers still needed a doctor to confirm death. Rules and regulations of the God-almighty handbook.

Sobs reached him, but all Nick could do was stand and stare. This woman was his first homicide victim since leaving the crime-ridden streets of London. He hadn’t expected to feel quite so appalled, but St. Andrews was the one pure spot in a life of brutality and it had just been violated.

He nodded toward the wailing girls. “They report it?”

“Yes, sir.” Sergeant Hammy Soothill waved his flashlight as if looking for footprints, but the sand was too dry. There wouldn’t be any tracks down there worth saving. “The one lassie slipped and fell in the blood.”

The distaste on Hammy’s face was echoed by Nick’s stomach. There was none of the usual black humor that accompanied sudden death and no one prodded the corpse with a ubiquitous black boot.

They were all somber as they got on with the job, maybe because no matter how many cases they’d had in other places, this was the first of its kind in St. Andrews.

“Get the photographer down here when the doctor’s finished. See if we can get hold of floodlights for the forensics team. Mouse, we’ll need a scale drawing, and Hammy, I want you to oversee every piece of evidence and make sure it is catalogued like the Crown Jewels.” He glanced at his watch. His boss would want to be notified, and the Procurator Fiscal.

His gaze lingered on the young woman’s body. Her skirt was hiked up around her thighs, suggesting a possible sexual assault, arms outstretched over her head as if she’d tried to crawl away.

All that blood…

She’d taken time to die.
